What is measured before a refrigeration part is blamed?
The real temperatures, not the display: a thermometer in the middle of each compartment. Then the evaporator fan, which should be heard running behind the freezer’s rear panel.
A fresh-food side that warms while the freezer holds usually means cold air is not being moved — a stopped fan, or an evaporator packed in frost because the defrost circuit has quit. A compressor that never cycles off sends us to the condenser coil and its airflow before anything is blamed on the sealed system.
For ice, the water filter and the supply come before the ice maker itself: a loaded cartridge or low pressure makes hollow, half-formed cubes. Sealed-system work is priced on its own, after the rest has been ruled out.

Which readings does a refrigeration visit take?
- Air. Each compartment on a probe thermometer, set against what the display claims.
- Frost. The evaporator behind the freezer’s rear panel: a light, even frost is normal; a solid block means defrost has stopped.
- Airflow. The evaporator fan turning, and the condenser coil clean enough to shed its heat.
- Circuit. The defrost heater and the part that ends each defrost, checked for continuity on a meter.
- Run time. Whether the compressor ever rests once the cabinet is cold.
