What do we look at on a Viking grill?
Everything between the gas and the grate. The burners, and the venturi tubes that feed them, where spiders and insects nest while a grill stands idle. The ignition: current Viking grills use electric igniters that glow, and many older ones spark from a push-button or a plug-in module. The valves and knobs. The infrared rotisserie burner across the back. And the gas reaching the grill, measured with a manometer rather than read from the colour of the flame. Viking publishes what it expects there: 4 to 7 inches of water column on natural gas, 11 to 14 on propane.

What goes wrong with a side burner?
A Viking outdoor side burner is a gas burner built into the island beside the grill, and it fails the way a grill burner does. The igniter stops lighting it. Boil-overs and debris block its ports. The flame turns yellow because its air is choked, or the valve will no longer turn it down. A side burner usually shares the grill’s supply, so a weak flame on both at once points upstream, at the supply or the regulator, rather than at either burner.

What does the first visit of the season cover?
The checks Viking asks for at the start of every grilling season, done with the right tools. Grates and briquette trays come out, and the burners, venturis, orifices and valves are checked for the webs and nests that collect over a wet winter under a cover. Hoses and fittings are looked over for abrasion and wear.
Then every burner, the side burner included, is lit and watched from high to low, and the gas is read with all of them on. A grill that passes goes back into service; one that does not gets a price before anything is ordered.

Three things worth knowing
Do you work on grills that run on propane cylinders as well as natural gas?
Yes. Propane grills on a 20-pound cylinder and grills plumbed to natural gas or a buried propane tank all come under the same visit. Tell us which when you book; Viking sets different pressures for the two gases, and the first measurements differ. Woodinville Viking Repair, (425) 321-3414.
Is it safe to keep using the grill until you come?
Not if you smell gas, see flame or scorching behind the control panel, or the hose looks cracked or chafed: turn the knobs off, close the supply at the tank or the shutoff, and leave it. Does this cover new gas lines or a switch from propane to natural gas?
This page is about repairing what is already installed. A new gas line or a meter connection is a gas fitter's work, and Viking's manuals say a conversion kit should be fitted by a qualified technician.
