Viking Refrigerator Stuck in Demo Mode: How to Get It Cooling Again

Lights on, display normal, food warm: treat that as showroom mode until proven otherwise. Here is how to confirm it, switch it off on each Viking series, and tell when the trouble is something else.

What is demo mode on a Viking refrigerator?

A Viking refrigerator in demo mode looks healthy and is not: the interior lights come on, the display shows a believable number, and the compressor never starts. Showroom units are set up that way so they can stand on a sales floor without running, and now and then one reaches a home kitchen still in that state. The way out depends on the series. A 5 Series built-in reads SHOW and leaves the mode with a three-button press, a 7 Series integrated model toggles it with VAC and ALARM, and for the integrated FDREIC family Viking sends you back to the seller.

Signs the cooling is switched off, not broken

Demo mode fools people because nothing seems dead. The light works and the buttons answer. On integrated FDREIC and FDBMIC7360 models, the screen can even report a temperature that has nothing to do with the air inside. What gives it away is silence: no hum behind the base grille, no air moving at the back wall, and leftovers that feel room-warm after a night on the shelf.

To settle it, stand a glass of water on a middle shelf for a few hours and read it with a kitchen thermometer. If the panel claims 38°F and the glass sits near room temperature, the display is not telling you the truth. On a 7 Series, a warm cabinet paired with a spotless display is suspicious in itself, because showroom mode on that line suppresses every fault code.

What else can look like demo mode?

Three other signals get confused with demo mode. After one of the winter windstorms that knock out power across Woodinville’s wooded neighborhoods, a 5 Series flashes its POWER light to report the outage, and ALARM OFF clears it. HIGH TEMP lights up when a compartment has run warm for two hours. DOOR OPEN blinks once a door has been left ajar more than three minutes.

Switching it off, series by series

SeriesWhat you seeHow to leave the mode
5 Series built-inThe display reads SHOWHold ACTIVATE CONTROLS, then press HIGHER and ALARM OFF together until three beeps sound
7 Series integrated (VRI, VFI)Lights work, no fault codes appearHold VAC and ALARM together for 3 seconds

On the 5 Series, keep your thumb on ACTIVATE CONTROLS the whole time you press the other two; releasing it early is the usual reason the sequence seems to fail.

On the 7 Series, the hold that turns showroom mode off also turns it on, so an accidental press while wiping down the panel can put a working unit into it. Count the 3 seconds, let go, and check that the temperature controls respond again.

The first day after real cooling returns

A unit that sat in showroom mode starts from room temperature. The 5 Series ships set at 38°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer, while 7 Series VRI and VFI models arrive at 39°F and 0°F. Viking says to allow 24 hours for the cabinets to reach those settings, and the same wait applies after every adjustment, so avoid tapping REF or FRZ every hour.

5 Series owners can speed things along. FAST COOL drives the compressor at high speed for 2 hours, MAX REF holds the fresh-food side at its coldest for four hours, and MAX FRZ does the same for the freezer for 6 hours. Keep perishables in an iced cooler until that glass of water reads cold.

Still warm a day later: from simple to serious

  1. Settings. Confirm the display no longer reads SHOW, the set points are where you want them, and no other mode got switched on while you were pressing buttons.
  2. Airflow. Containers pushed hard against the rear wall block the cold air the fresh-food side depends on. Leave a finger’s width of space.

Does the condenser need cleaning?

A blinking CL on a 7 Series means the coil wants cleaning. Viking wants that done every 6 months; once the coil is clean, press both arrow keys together for 3 seconds and the CL goes away. Integrated models prompt with CHECK COND. every 6 months: hold the power button about 3 seconds to shut the unit off, wait about 30 minutes, remove the grille beneath the door, vacuum the coil with a soft brush, then restart and reset the reminder. A 5 Series asks less of you, since its Super Clog-Resistant coil is built to go without routine cleaning; if dust does gather, an extended narrow vacuum nozzle reaches it.

Door gaskets, and when to stop

Door gaskets. Every three months, wash them with mild detergent or 4 tablespoons of baking soda per quart of warm water, then wipe on a light film of petroleum jelly so they stay pliable.

The stop point. If the panel ignores the exit sequence, the fans stay silent, frost builds on the back wall, or a 5 Series shows oPn or Shr and will not return to a temperature after ALARM OFF, stop there. Viking says that last case calls for a technician immediately.

Is the freezer frozen solid while only the fresh-food side warms? That split has causes of its own, set out in why a Viking runs warm above a cold freezer.

What a visit costs

Our visit costs $89 flat. It covers the drive out and a full diagnosis, and we deduct it from the final invoice when you approve the work. A fan or defrost fault costs least, a control board that refuses the exit sequence more, and sealed-system work the most. The exact figure comes after diagnosis, before any work starts. Check your purchase date before agreeing to sealed-system work, because Viking’s sealed-system coverage includes labor through year 6, then pays for parts alone from year 7 to year 12.

We work in Downtown Woodinville, Wellington, Hollywood Hill and Cottage Lake. Book through our Viking refrigerator repair page or call (425) 321-3414.

Follow-ups

Why does my Viking show a normal temperature but feel warm inside?

Most often it is still in demo or showroom mode, where the lights and controls work but the cooling never runs, and integrated models can display false temperatures in that state. Check with a thermometer in a glass of water, follow the exit steps for your series, and call Woodinville Viking Repair if it stays warm.

How long does a Viking take to get cold after leaving showroom mode?

Give it 24 hours. Viking says the cabinets need that long to reach their settings after plug-in or any change, with the 5 Series starting at 38°F and 0°F and 7 Series VRI and VFI models at 39°F and 0°F. Still warm after a day? Call (425) 321-3414.

Can I turn off Demo Mode on an integrated FDREIC myself?

Viking's guidance for its integrated FDREIC family is to contact the store or dealer that sold the unit and have them disable Demo Mode. If the seller cannot help, or the unit still will not cool afterward, call Woodinville Viking Repair at (425) 321-3414 for a diagnosis.

Why is there no error code even though my 7 Series is warm?

Showroom mode on the 7 Series shuts off every control except the interior lights, and it hides fault codes too. Hold VAC and ALARM for 3 seconds to toggle it off, then watch whether a code such as a blinking CL appears; Woodinville Viking Repair can take it from there.
